Language Week

Languages Week
From 22nd to 26th September the whole school took part in Languages Week. The focus was on languages in our school.

Each class started their week with a survey to find out how many different languages were spoken by their classmates.

Children who can speak languages other than English were able to teach the rest of their class some words and phrases. It was lots of fun and, thanks to the wonderful teaching skills of the children involved, children and staff were able to learn lots of words in all sorts of languages such as Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Serbian, Cantonese, Greek, Welsh, Icelandic, Hebrew and Thai.  Some classes were also able to practise their German and Spanish speaking skills.

The children had fun playing games such as Who said Hello, Twenty questions, Pass the language and more using the words they had learnt.

The children also took part in various language-related  activities throughout the week. These included:
·        developing mendhi designs adding words written in Punjabi script
·        using ICT lessons to research countries. This information was used to produce colourful, informative posters
·        producing fact sheets on the languages in our school
·        using computer software to record and present the findings of their languages survey.

Friday 26th September

We celebrated European Day of Languages on Friday with a collective worship during which all classes shared what they had learnt and showed some of the wonderful work they had produced. The children were encouraged to use the new words they had learnt during the rest of the day.
