Spy Dog Author visits school
On Wednesday February 9th 2011, Andrew Cope author of the fabulous Spy Dog series of books came to visit the children. The children began the day as a whole school where they learnt about how Andy had become what he describes as an accidental author. Lara the spy dog was also in school and she also spent the day meeting children.
He explained to the children that he had made some life changing decisions and had decided that if he set himself goals he wanted to do everything he could to achieve them. He decided he was going to get Spy Dog published and has now had over 1million copies published, all over the world.
He spoke to the children about reading and how when we read it is good for the brain how it gives us lots of ideas and sparks the imagination. He set each year group a writing challenge.
Year 3 and 4 were asked to write the first chapter of a book about a pet gorilla who is left at home when the family goes to work and school. They had to think about what the gorilla might do and how exciting it could be. They had to end their story on a cliff-hanger...
Year 5 had to weave as many references to chocolate bars and confectionary as they could into their stories. For example - The flying saucer landed on Mars the first alien was called Areo he was a bit of a smartie pants.
Year 6 was given the challenge - it was an ordinary Wednesday and they had to include the sentence Mrs Jones your toe nails are melting.
The children had time to plan their stories and then they began the business of writing the school was buzzing as childrens pencils whizzed across pages as they rose to the challenges set.
We gathered together to hear a selection of stories from across the school. Mr Cope then chose two of the very best and congratulations go to Aneesa in Year 3 and Abigail in Year 6.
