Maths

Subject Leader: Mrs H Reader

Our Intent

At St Peter’s, we develop a positive mathematical culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence. We believe everyone is a mathematician and we support children to unlock their mathematical potential and accomplish personal success. Children experience a progressive mastery curriculum enabling them to build on prior knowledge, make connections and uncover relationships and generalisations. We have devised a curriculum that matches at least the National Curriculum expectations and we want increasing proportions of pupils to meet defined age-appropriate endpoints within that curriculum. For those children who do not achieve this then we plan and monitor to make sure that they make progress that is in line with their potential.

Throughout our curriculum, we develop the children’s fluency of facts, procedures and concepts whilst structuring and modelling opportunities to reason mathematically and solve problems. Exposure to these opportunities enable us to foster key values of courage, resilience, creativity and perseverance as well as providing a foundation for children to understand the world around them. Our ambition is for children to leave St Peter’s with the necessary maths knowledge, skills and curiosity to enjoy and engage mathematically throughout their futures.
