Our Intent
At St. Peter’s Church of England Junior School, we have designed our curriculum to enable our children to be confident learners. We have designed a deep and rich Music curriculum to engage, develop, innovate, and promote children’s learning built upon our key mission statement of ‘Unlocking Our Potential’. The Music curriculum has been developed hand in hand with our mission statement, through our core values of ‘Perseverance, Courage, Respect and Compassion’.
Through the provision of an engaging Music curriculum, we aim to help all children feel that they are musical, and to develop a life-long love of music. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident performers, composers and listeners. Our school values are intrinsic to our Music curriculum. Children will develop RESPECT as they appreciate the music of all traditions and cultures through listening to music from all around the world and across the generations. Pupils will develop PERSEVERENCE as they develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments and improvising and composing music. Children will foster COMPASSION as they listen and respond to music from different generations and cultures. COURAGE will be required when learning a new instrument and performing in front of an audience. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down. Through music, our curriculum helps children develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and presentation and performance skills. All of these skills promote our key mission statement of ‘Unlocking Our Potential’ and will help our children develop as learners whilst at St. Peter’s and beyond.
